The Research Assistant (Genetics & Epidemiology) will be
involved in research projects focusing on both type 1 and type 2
diabetes. Projects are aimed to find links between genes and/or
metabolites that may cause diabetes or complications of diabetes.
Emphasis will be placed on cardiovascular and renal complications
that are frequently associated with diabetes.
Under direct supervision, the Research Assistant will perform
molecular genetic techniques, participate in lab management, and
monitoring laboratory safety. Also, assist in completing projects
for the Molecular Phenotyping and Genotyping Core (MPGC). The MPGC
provides services to Joslin and the Harvard community including,
but not limited to DNA extraction, preparation of DNA aliquots from
the Core's repository, SNP genotyping, and next-generation
sequencing library preparation.
Organize and work on projects which utilize molecular genetic
techniques (e.g. DNA extraction, PCR, DNA cloning, mutation
screening, manual and automated genotyping)
Record and analyze data using specialized software(s).
Maintain and preserve the integrity of laboratory equipment by
ensuring its proper use
Maintain inventories of laboratory supplies and order materials
needed by laboratory staff, ensuring all orders are within the
Monitor radioisotope and biohazardous material usage, handling, and
Utilize cost comparisons to evaluate various vendors and devise the
most cost effective ways of carrying out laboratory procedures
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related discipline.
0-2 years related work experience.
Previous undergraduate or post-graduate lab experience,
particularly in molecular genetic techniques is preferred.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to navigate
at a basic level within various web-based applications.
Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments and equipment.
Ability to follow general instructions and procedures, as
Strong organizational and communication skills (communicate clearly
and effectively via verbal and written instruction).
Ability to prioritize responsibilities - through completion.
Ability to work independently and with others in the lab - to
interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff
and/or external contacts.
Learn and become proficient in DNA extractions, PCR and SNP
genotyping, and NGS library preparation.
Monitor general lab safety, biohazard material usage and ensure
proper disposal of lab wastes.
