DEFINITIONTo perform a full range of custodial duties related to the care, maintenance and cleaning of assigned buildings.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSEmployees within this classification perform a full range of custodial duties assigned including the care, maintenance and cleaning of assigned buildings. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. They are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the Building Services Department. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Custodian in that the latter has lead responsibility and assists in training and supervising lower level staff. Senior Custodians are also responsible for HVAC monitoring and minor maintenance and care.SUPERVISON RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from senior custodian and management team.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clean and sanitize rest room facilities and related fixtures including drinking fountains; refrigerated water coolers, custodial mop sinks, ---rest room sinks, urinals and toilets; replenish supplies in restrooms.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures and equipment.
  • Wash windows, mirrors and walls.
  • Wash tables and chairs as required.
  • Empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; setup rooms for conferences and meetings.
  • Replace lights and adjust shades and blinds.
  • Identify and report building maintenance needs in assigned buildings and facilities.
  • Perform specialized projects such as restoration programs on floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, and other items.
  • Receive deliveries and organize stockrooms.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Safe work practices. Ability to:
    • Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.
    • Use a variety of custodial equipment, supplies and materials.
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
    • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
      • Walking, standing, bending, or crouching for extended periods of time
      • Operating assigned equipment and vehicles
      • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
      • Making observations
      • Communicating with others
      • Reading and writing
      • Operating assigned equipment and vehicles Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
        • Experience
          • Some custodial experience is desirable.
          • Training
            • Completion of formal or informal education at a level which provides the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
            • License or Certificate
              • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's licenseWORKING CONDITIONSEnvironmental Conditions
                • Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to chemicals, dust, and biohazard waste.Physical Conditions
