Job Description:

Join our aquatics team at the beautiful Evelyn Kirrane Aquatics Center in Brookline boasting three pools and space for athletics, health, wellness and camp activities for the public. The Town of Brookline is seeking an Adaptive Aquatics Instructor to provide individualized adaptive swimming instruction to participants with disabilities in a fun yet safe and nurturing environment. The Adaptive Aquatic Instructor position is to support all individuals needs including individuals with physical, sensory, developmental, neurological or other health challenges. This position will utilize aquatic therapy techniques to develop individualized plans to meet each clients goal and builds confidence. The adaptive aquatic instructor will work 1 to 1 or with small groups on a weekly basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ensure safety of participants. Develop and implement a specialized and inclusive group program for individuals with varying abilities. Prepare lesson plans and provide instruction to participants in collaboration with Brookline Recreations Therapeutic Recreation department. Adapt your teaching approaches to the age, experience and ability of participants, so they can meet course objectives. Develop group program description with detail to goals, lesson structure and materials required. Develop relationships and regularly communicate progress with parents or caregivers, as needed. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including but not limited to attendance, lesson plans, and progress reports. Ensure class preparations are complete and begin instruction according to set schedule. Clean-up and put materials away after class. Address and redirect inappropriate behavior as needed. Communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress. Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility emergency action plans.


This individual will work under the general supervision of the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, following department policies and appropriate professional standards. The employee operates independently and alongside the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.

Work Environment

Administrative work is performed in office conditions. Swim will take place at the pool, programs often take place outside and in the community. The employee may be exposed to adverse seasonal weather conditions. The workload varies and is subject to seasonal changes and requires planning.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Actively or graduated from an accredited college/university program with at least 60 semester or 90 quarter units, equivalent to two (2) years or more of college at the time of application enrollment in a degree program such as Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Management, Special Education, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, or Early Childhood Education is a plus.

1-2 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities or more

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Drivers License, Class D
  • Therapeutic Recreation Certification (suggested)
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification (suggested)
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications (suggested)

Physical Requirements

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, and may be required to lift up to 30 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine and technical documents, use a computer, answer a telephone, and operate a motor vehicle. Individual will need to demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with community members and coworkers in person, over email and on the phone
